Chaining

A series of separate behaviors or response elements that must be performed in a particular order to result in reinforcement.

A sequence of related behaviors, each of which provides the cue for the next, and the last of which produces a reinforcer.

Bex Tasker Positively Together

A handy trick to have up your sleeve on a hot day! Hokey Pokey is a 6 year old clicker trained horse from New Zealand.

Behaviours in the chain are:
- walk to box
- push lid with nose
- pick up bottle
- orient to handler (holding bottle)
- walk to handler
- offer bottle

All of his fetch behaviours are back-chained, by reinforcing the "place object in person's hand" first and always, adding each prior link in sequence. Each subsequent part of the fetch chain reinforces itself as it leads towards the final link.
